Mechanical transplanting Current seed rate for mechanical transplanting is 80 – 90kg/ha. The target seed rate for hybrids is 20 –30kg/ha. This involved planting singled or double seedling per point and also working with distance within row. Distance between row is fixed. It was concluded that it is too risky to plant single seedling per point due to seedling mortality, thus 2 seedlings per point is better than single seedling. SEED RATE STUDIES - It is important that seed rate be reduce to make hybrid attractive. Current seed rate of farmers planting ordinary/inbred varieties is between 120 to 180kg/ha. This must be reduced to about 20 – 40kg/ha. Two types of studies were carried out:
- Direct seeding
- In main season 2005/06, seed rate of 100kg/ha were compared to seed rate of 50kg/ha. It was concluded that 50 kg/ha performed as well as 100 kg/ha for hybrid. CURRENT ACTIVITIES – MAIN SEASON 2006/07 - Seed rate trial.
- These seed rate were repeated by working on the seedling try management and transplanter. Seed rate in the try was between 70gm to 140 gm per try. The important issue is uniformity of seeding so that. This is to make sure that there will be minimum missing hill.
- This is carried both on Tambun Tulang and Seberang Perai.
- Work is also in progress to try seed drilling using Vietnam made manual seed drill. If seed rate can be reduce to 20 -30kg/ha, it will be modified for suitability as attachment to power tiller or mini tractor.
